Senior Girls’ Football Shield Semi- Final

The Senior Girls’ Football Team finished off their league campaign in the semi-final of the shield on Thursday, 9th October. They were competing with St. Mary’s & St. Benedict’s, Raheny, for the chance to display their skills in the shield final in Croke Park.

Following postponement from the previous day, the D7 girls were eager to get going and got stuck in early on. With damp underfoot conditions and a strong breeze conditions favoured those who were willing to scrap for the ball, with the D 7 side frequently coming out on top & holding much of the possession in the first half.

The opposition got the scoring underway with some skilful point taking. Not to be outdone, the D7 side tested our volunteer umpires’ new found skills with a goal! D7 went into the second half 2 points down and determined. However, despite some fantastic goalkeeping and defending D7 attacks weren’t rewarded often enough and St. Benedict’s won their place in the final in this highly contested match.

Well done to all of the squad involved. They have developed a great sense of team spirit and a fantastic work ethic over the course of the league this year. With the strong representation from 4th and 5th Class they should have no problem capitalising on this next year and adding to the trophy cabinet. Many thanks to all the parents who volunteered to transport, umpire and support the team this year also.
