4th class performing at Peace Proms in RDS last Sunday night

Good afternoon, parents and guardians,

I hope you have all had a lovely week.

A huge thank you to our 4th Class for giving us a superb night out last Sunday at the Peace Proms in the RDS. Many thanks to Hanora for leading the group, and to Gráinne, Róisín and Paul for accompanying the children. It was truly a night to remember, and the children gave it their all.

Thank you also to 4th Class and to Padraig for attending the parent–teacher meetings this week. For parents of children receiving support teaching in 1st, 3rd and 4th Classes, those meetings will take place in March — further details will follow.

We are delighted to announce that Gaeilge lessons for parents and guardians will be starting again. The plan is to begin on Thursday 26th, with a five-week programme offering three levels: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. The cost will be €35. More information will be shared shortly.

Please note that the school will be closed next week for midterm break. School will reopen on Monday 23rd February, but will close again on Thursday for Primary Curriculum Framework training for all teachers. We understand this may be inconvenient; however, the date was assigned to us by Oide.

 Concern Debating Quarter-Final

Dublin 7 Educate Together took on St. Colmcille’s CS on Wednesday in the quarter-final of the Concern Primary Debating Competition. The motion being debated was: Tourism does more harm than good. Dublin 7 were proposing the motion which is a tough position to take up. Who wouldn’t want a holiday in the sun looking out at the weather this week? The debating panel of India, Luka, Tom , Tom, Penny and Jeremy were incredible and emerged victorious. St. Colmcille’s were the toughest opposition they have faced so far by a wide margin but the team had their homework done. They relied on facts to back up their points and displayed great teamwork. According to the adjudicator the quality of the debate was worthy of a final. On to the semi-final! The next motion is: Universal internet access should be the world’s top priority in 2026.

6th class Science

During Science this week, Niamh’s 6th Class pupils took part in a hands-on “Kitchen Science” lesson exploring how different mixtures and solutions can be separated. Using everyday materials, the children investigated four scientific methods: filtration, evaporation, sieving and decanting.

We began by creating a muddy water mixture and using filters to separate the solid particles from the liquid. We then explored evaporation by dissolving salt in water and observing how salt crystals remain when the water disappears. In another activity, we used sieves to separate mixtures of dry foods such as rice, flour and lentils, learning how particle size affects separation. Finally, we examined how oil and water separate into layers and practised decanting to remove one liquid from another.

News2Day

Enda’s 6th Class had their submission to News2Day published on RTE on Wednesday. News2Day asked: ‘What would you put in a time capsule for future generations?’ The answers ranged from practical to zany.

Leinster House

Enda’s 6th class visited Leinster House on Monday as guests of local TD Marie Sherlock. The pupils enjoyed a guided tour of the historic building, including visits to the Dáil and Seanad chambers. The pupils also took the opportunity to raise local constituency issues with Deputy Sherlock in the former office of Michael D. Higgins and Eamon de Valera. The class highlighted litter issues in the city centre, dog fouling on the footpaths and e-scooters being driven dangerously on the roads. The class have yet to confirm whether or not they will be putting someone forward for the by-election in May.

On the 8th of February Jennifer’s 4th class and Padraig’s 4th class took a coach to the RDS to do Peace Proms. There were more than 2000 children  from lots of different schools in the choir. The orchestra was a mix of children  and young adults. There were pipers, trumpets, violinists, pianists, Irish dancers and lots more instruments. The most special song we did was Courage to Change by Sia. We learned sign language to perform the song. Thank you to Hanora for teaching us all the songs and dance moves. We had so much fun!

Caifé na bPancóg

Today Jennifer’s 4th class had a “Caifé na bPancóg” so we could practice speaking as gaeilge. It was all in  Irish and we spent a few days learning what to say so we could order in Irish. It was really fun. Bhí na pancóga an bhlasta!
