Congratulations to our Concern Debating Finalists today on their amazing win in Dublin West Education Centre

Good afternoon families,

I hope your week has been as enjoyable as ours has been in school. On Monday, we had a glorious St. Patrick’s Day parade in the yard. On Wednesday, our 5th classes visited Henrietta Street. Today began with a few songs from Ciara’s Junior Infants, after which I went to Tallaght with one of our 6th classes to support our three debaters in the final of the Concern Debates. In the afternoon, our girls played a soccer match on the TU Dublin campus. Each of these events was thoroughly enjoyable.

What was loveliest to observe throughout all of these activities was the great appreciation the children show for one another when they step forward to parade, sing a song, play a game, or take part in a debate. This peer encouragement inspires the children to move outside their comfort zone and reap the rewards for doing so.

How lucky we are to work with children who have the courage to try new things.

How lucky we are to have fabulous staff who coordinate the singing, parading, debating and sports.

How lucky we are in school to witness the fruits of all the children’s hard work.

Thanks to PGSA for organising the Table Quiz tonight.

Looking forward to Hurling and Camogie training starting again next Monday.

Reminder that school closes next Friday at 12pm.

D7ET Concern Debating Champions

After a gruelling series of debates D7ET finally found itself at the Concern debating final at the Dublin West Education Centre in Tallaght.

It was a big ask moving the debates from Zoom to in front of a large audience but the debating team of India, Luka and Tom excelled in the face-to-face confrontation. The adrenaline boost gave them the edge on the very well prepared and capable proposition side, Star of the Sea Sandymount NS.

D7ET were opposing the motion: No country should be using fossil fuels in 10 years. They highlighted the current inefficiencies in renewable energy and the economic disruption such an abrupt change would cause.

Well done to everyone who took part in the Concern Debating this year in Enda’s 6th. Everyone contributed to today’s success and the school is so proud of their courage and hard work.

Enda, thanks for the phenomenal work in preparing the children for this.

D7 Girls Soccer Team

D7 Girls Soccer Team had a fantastic win today at their first league match in Grangegorman against Broombridge Educate Together.

Brillant effort put in from the  6th and 5th class girls on the team and a beautiful day for the match! Well done to all the girls involved.

Thanks Rebecca and Mauro for training and accompanying the team to the game.

Abilities Awareness Day

Jack’s class Irish Sign Language – Dublin 7

We enjoyed another fantastic day in D7ET this week celebrating ‘Abilities Awareness Day on Thursday 19th March.

Classes explored a range of topics.  In Infants they looked at Physical Disability with a special talk from our Senior Infants teacher Grace.  First class concentrated on Visual Impairment where children wrote and modelled their own braille.  Hearing Impairment was explored in Second where they read some fantastic books and learned some Irish Sign Language – check out Jack’s class signing ‘Dublin Seven! ‘

Third class designed socks for World Down Syndrome Day, Fourth class leaned about Specific Learning Difficulties and had an informative and inspirational visit from Christina (Jack in SI’s mam) who spoke about her own experiences and 5th & 6th class explored Neurodiversity and made some fantastic posters.  The ALC classes enjoyed a wonderful video on using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) kindly put together by one of the families.

As always, the quality of engagement around the topics has been extremely thoughtful and interesting.

A huge thank you to all who gave their time and enthusiasm to make this a fantastic day.

HENRIETTA ST VISIT

Both 5th classes visited 14 Henrietta St on Wednesday to see both sides of Georgian Dublin. We saw a Georgian house as it was in 1740s when first built. The house belonged to Lord Molesworth, whose parties made the social pages on the newspapers of the day. It was hard to believe that the same house was used to house 100 of Dublin’s poorest in the tenements of the early 1900s. At least, after seeing the hardships of tenement life, no one will complain about their own life afterwards – for a day or two.    But at least, they had a piano.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Fionnuala
